The world as we know and perceive it, with our vision, is a vast multidimensional space. More precisely, everything around us is a three-dimensional model, that is, we can distinguish all aspects of an element in our environment. But there are also other dimensions, such as two dimensions. This one has no depth and no volume. These two dimensions, 2D and 3D, usually refer to the world of graphics, such as photography, animation, computer graphics, and film. But they also refer to science, such as mathematics.
What is 2D?
The terms 2D and 3D stand for 2 and 3 dimensions respectively. They are models and representations of objects, but also a method of image distribution which refers to data space.
In the 2D case, the representation space is defined by two pieces of data: the length X and the width Y. Thus, a 2D shape is flat. To illustrate this, take a piece of paper and a pencil and draw a square. You will notice that it has no relief and no thickness. It is a simple number, a two-dimensional object.
If 2D is used in painting and other artistic disciplines, it also exists in the field of audiovisual and animation. For example, the first video games were 2D. They consisted of simple graphics based on still images in motion. This is still the case in some cartoons and TV commercials.
What is 3D?
With 3D, a third element has been added: height. 2D is a flat representation without depth. On the other hand, 3D is a three-dimensional model that makes it possible to render a volume. It is more realistic because it shows every detail of an object.
Using our sheet of paper as an example, if you draw 6 squares and put them together, you will get a cube. This is a 3-dimensional figure.
3D is used in several fields of activity, such as printing and architecture, but also for audiovisual, just like 2D. Currently, many movies and video games are offered in 3D to make it more immersive.
